I worked as a freelancer for a friend who's company got acquired by a public company. It wasn't fully smooth. I slacked off at some times and he wasn't fully happy. I didn't formally join the company so didn't receive any stock options etc. However, the relationship stayed strong and we're still friends. I think it's largely a question of the maturity of the people involved.
