Changes in retinal thickness are thought to be linked to systemic diseases. Zekavat and colleagues performed a cross-phenotype analysis using retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images from the UK Biobank and identified associations between retinal layer thickness and incident ocular, neuropsychiatric, and cardiometabolic diseases during a median 10-year follow-up. Genome-wide associations identified 259 loci linked to retinal layer thickness and revealed concordant genetic and phenotypic associations between OCT retinal layer thickness and certain ocular and systemic conditions. These results suggest that OCT imaging might be used to derive retinal markers for systemic and ocular health, but further validation of clinical utility is needed. —Daniela Neuhofer
