Find a college course and follow its structure & do some exploration on archive. In math, I've found that some writing is a lot easier to learn from, due to its clarity and style. I'm usually not satisfied with the canonical book choices in math. Sometimes books are chosen because of tradition and not because of clarity. Like, there's so much good modern writing and the article recommends reading Jacobson for Algebra?? really?
