I currently read through both PDF and EPUB formats, and I don't think PDF is that bad.
I think the advantage of PDF is that you can take notes like a paper book, and you can write directly on the document through software such as Goodnote on the iPad. However, PDF is indeed inconvenient to read on small-screen devices, and high-quality PDF files are too large. The PDF of a book may be as high as several hundred MB.
The advantage of the EPUB format is that it can adapt to more devices and the files are smaller. It is more troublesome to mark EPUB. Maybe new devices like Kindle Scribe can do it, but as far as my experience of reading EPUB on Kindle paperwhite and iPhone, I can only make some simple marks or record some text by typing.
I think PDF is closer to the experience of a paper book, but only if you use a screen no less than the size of a book. The EPUB format is more suitable for mobile electronic reading.
