He Died in a Tragic Accident. Why Did the Internet Say He Was Murdered?
- r0ckarong 3y agoAds, the answer is always because we made the colossal error to build our information network around the ability to make money simply by drawing attention not specificity or accuracy.
- casey2 3y agoI too wish we could go back to the time when people didn't tell tall-tales. :p
- wolverine876 3y agoWhat do you mean?
- gertop 3y agoIt's sarcasm. He means people have always lied for attention and money and it's not something new created by the ads economy.
- beardyw 3y agoI think you might find that newsprint was absolutely no different until recent times.
- MrYellowP 3y agoYou might find that printed news is still absolutely no different.
- Whoppertime 3y agoAnswers not always Ads sometimes it's war. Whether it is reporting on the Gulf of Tonkin or WMDs in Iraq. Going back to the Spanish American War the Press has beat the drum of war and justified aggression overseas. They can turn their backs on it eventually like Vietnam and Iraq but at the start they repeat propaganda without hesitation
- drekipus 3y agoIt's usually not just for "attention" or trolling purposes either; Changing the narrative has an intent: the new narrative fits a particular purpose; whether it's to disenfranchise the system, or to encourage people to bring change. I've seen numerous times that subways in NYC are dangerous, and I've seen videos (YT, liveleak, tiktok, etc) that show something like that, but the moment you try to bring in some form of "well no ackshully statistically it's safe" then people will invent fables to amplify the message: it doesn't matter what the statistics are, people feel unsafe. (Note, before I get downvoted: I'm not an American, i don't contribute nor can i do anything, just giving my observation / what I think it might be; I can't even locate NY on a map.)
- astrange 3y agoIt's up in the northeast corner. If you're in Boston that's too northeast though. And yes, NYC is the safest place in the country. (IIRC this is including crimes, but it's even more so because you don't have to get in a car, by far the most dangerous thing most people do.)
- astrange 3y agoincluding -> only including
- wolverine876 3y agoIncredibly, though that tactic has been used for years now, there's no word for the tactic or the people using it.
- pvaldes 3y agoPolice suspecting fool game and sending a few hooks would be my first candidate. The metro lawyers trying to knit a plausible case of "not-our-fault, out trains are secure" would be the second.
- aaron695 3y agoThe paywall version is missing a lot of the story, for the rest see - https://archive.is/4ed9D https://archive.is/4ed9D or https://www.nytimesn7cgmftshazwhfgzm37qxb44r64ytbb2dj3x62d2lljsciiyd.onion/2024/01/25/nyregion/obituary-pirates-matteo-sachman.html https://www.nytimesn7cgmftshazwhfgzm37qxb44r64ytbb2dj3x62d2l...
- genman 3y agoIf even judge and jury can't distinguish a murder from a tragic accident then how should completely biased and motivated general public do it?
- pasttense01 3y agoThe big question is not why people publish this junk; the big question is why these articles rank so high in Google search results. The internet has always been filled with garbage but many years ago that would be at the bottom of search results--and few people looked that far.
- beej71 3y agoBecause Google wants the money, I think.
