Too many APPs are being built with Electron.
There really just needs to be a cross platform API that renders with native widgets and is easy to link / build against for OSX+, IOS+, Android+, and Windows+. Make the platform open spec and free to implement and Linux / BSD will probably follow on their own.
The do or die is shipping natively, with the OS, on the popular closed platforms. Web browsers are where engineering dollars are already spent to adapt a common API (web tech) to native platform tech and that's why Electron and similar things see traction.
- asdff 3y agoThere's plenty of cross platform APIs, some of them quite ancient and established, the problem though is too many choices.
- wenc 3y agoI mean there is Qt and wxWidgets but they look dated compared to Electron which supports the latest in web front end technologies.
- rubymamis 3y agoThey "look" outdated because many developers using Qt simply don't care about aesthetics, unfortunately. But there are some few good exceptions. Telegram Desktop uses Qt[1]. Another one is a new app I'm working on[2]. [1] https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop [2] https://www.get-plume.com/ https://www.get-plume.com/
