what do you mean by "a joke"? I chose not to buy nvidia due to the proprietary drivers, but I didn't think they were "a joke". In the next yearish we're likely to see decently performing open drivers via nouveau (in kernel) and nvk (in mesa) which will be really nice for fitting in with the everything else, but I doubt it will reach the same performance level as the proprietary drivers.
- Vilian 3y agoi tried running linux in my friend pc he has an 3060, was an.... interesting experience
- ornornor 3y agoI mean they don’t work well. At all. I get graphical glitches in gnome, it crashes GPU accelerated browser tabs, my logs are full of “FAULT_PTE ACCESS_TYPE_READ” errors, it freezes the displays for 30 seconds seemingly randomly. And that’s with the latest drivers available for Linux and the latest available 6.5 kernel.
- itsTyrion 3y agoI have NONE of those what the heck. I do have the long-standing issue of way too aggressive switch to 3D clocks, causing my 1070 to jump from 8 to 40W as soon as something happens on Desktop - which is not just wasteful, but also perfect to make the fans start and stop constantly -_- I’m mostly on Windows these days tho bc it’s a better fit for my daily stuff
- johnny22 3y agoIsn't that why GPU accel isn't turned on by default still? Or did that change. I myself went to AMD for my new laptop, but didn't have those problems on my current laptop with a 960M.
