Personally, I doubt that self-awareness can be achieved without some form of consciousness, and I feel that self-awareness is a key component of higher intelligence. If intelligence and/or consciousness arise as emergent properties in the right sort of complex system, they will disappear from view in a low-level analysis of the causal processes occurring in that system.
