Quite the American-centric pov on University education, I would say.
But then so is the NYT article, so what we've got here is a localized storm.
- marcus_holmes 3y agoI'm writing from Australia. But I could be writing from the UK too.
- alephnerd 3y ago> Quite the American-centric pov on University education, I would say. Where are you from? The only developed countries with free or near free college are Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Scandinavia, Spain, NZ, and Italy
- phone8675309 3y agoHaving some of the best universities in the world that attract a large population of international students will do that. Do you think the majority of foreign students are going to, say, Harvard and Yale, so they can vibe out and engage with interesting ideas and discussion or to get a degree, go home, and actually do something with it?
- inglor_cz 3y agoFor all their sanctimoniousness, universities tend to exhibit quite disconcerting levels of naked greed whenever they have an opportunity to do so. Just looking at the amount of outright fraud that keeps the "publish or perish" grant system going ... the professors aren't in a position to criticize the capitalists for anything. Let's not even start about the pusillanimity towards Beijing once enough CCP-affiliated students start paying their high tuition.
