My impression is that these are simple regular expressions used to try to improve titles programmatically. On average, they probably make things better, but often enough they make things worse.
You are a conscientious poster with good instincts. You should consider the change as merely a suggestion, and change it back if you think it makes things better. It is not a final decision.
- PaulHoule 3y agoI am thinking about programming my autoposter so it detects when this happens and automatically changes the headline back. It would be also useful if it could post a comment.
- nkurz 3y agoBy contrast, I don't think this is a good idea. Popping up an alert that puts a human in the loop when the title is modified might be good, but automatically reverting seems bad. If the system is unhelpful on average, we should lobby to have it changed rather than subverting it. Dan's reasonable, he'll listen to evidence.
- PaulHoule 3y agoI think that system is helpful on average but between YOShInOn and I we are already rewriting headlines to conform to HN requirements and expectations. Thus in the cases that our headlines are rewritten it is likely to be some failure case like decapitalizing an acronym.
- bookofjoe 3y agoThank you for your kind words. Full disclosure: my laziness exceeds my need to see the publication's original title on HN, thus going forward I will cheerfully accept whatever dangAI spits out.
