Most of Russia's War Chips Are Made by US and EU Companies (Intel, AMD, STM)
- incomingpain 3y agoThe ukraine war is about chips... taiwan is about chips. Billions of $ are being sunk into new chip fabs outside the axis influence. https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/12/11/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-chips-and-science-act-preliminary-agreement/ https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases... The reason Russia went to war withUkraine is: https://www.reuters.com/technology/exclusive-ukraine-halts-half-worlds-neon-output-chips-clouding-outlook-2022-03-11/ https://www.reuters.com/technology/exclusive-ukraine-halts-h... That's an older article, production resumed and any russia navy that gets anywhere near odessa gets sunk. World wars suck eh. But for this same reason, this is why SMIC is fully embargoed by everyone. This is why Taiwan will fall. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-67855477 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-67855477 The current world war is all about chips and cyber armies.

- throwaway4good 3y agoThese are generic components that have been on the market in some cases for decades and can be picked up for a few dollars a piece in any electronics store. There is no realistic way to prevent those components from being sold to Russia. Here is a teardown of a Russian Orlan-drone: https://informnapalm.org/en/russian-drone-orlan-10-consists-of-parts-produced-in-the-usa-and-other-countries-photo-evidence/ https://informnapalm.org/en/russian-drone-orlan-10-consists-...
- RecycledEle 3y agoGood luck stopping the Russian procurement people. We could not even stop them from spying on the Manhattan Project.
- dragontamer 3y agoWe need to stop pretending that Russia is anywhere near as strong as East Germany + Ukraine + rest of Soviet Union. This here proves that Russians cannot make chips on their own. The loss of East Germany and other high tech sectors of the former union is grossly apparent. EDIT: if Russia were any stronger than they really are, they'd build their own chips. Rather than try to avoid sanctions to purchase our $1 low-tech mass produced chips. The fact that they've stopped so low as to rely upon burglary of others is our advantage. It means we can slow down and hamper their efforts.
- itsyaboi 3y agoThis is silly. No one can "make chips on their own" except for China/Taiwan. Even the US would be limited to manufacturing small quantities for military/research purposes that are several generations behind the state of the art. Consumer electronics would become a scarce commodity very quickly.
- Alpha3031 3y agoSeems weird to include SMIC and not Samsung or Intel. Those two are behind TSMC, sure, but not so far behind that it's sensible to leave their facilities off the map of "makes chips on their own". They're not GloFo.
- yorwba 3y agoFYI, this is the STM named in the title: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STMicroelectronics https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STMicroelectronics They can't make newest-generation chips for a flagship smartphone, but simpler devices are likely going to be fine.

- boeingUH60 3y agoIt's almost impossible to enforce sanctions for everyday products in a globalized world. As long as there's money to be made, there's always someone willing to skirt sanctions to make a buck. Prosecutors end up playing whack-a-mole with the evaders.
- brnt 3y agoIt's hard, and cannot be done airtight, but more could be done methinks. Russia is in a free trade zone with 5 countries, three of which AFAIK aren't targeted at all by sanctions. We should really consider trade there to be effectively accessible by Russia, because it is. We can just stop that by including those countries in the sanctions. There are strategies for whack-a-mole.
- cwiz 3y agoDeep state, who might have though
- linuxftw 3y agoThere's no evidence in the article substantiating the claim that most of the 'war chips' are made by US and EU companies. Only that a large amount of chips are still heading into Russia. I would suspect that most of their domestic chip-making capabilities are focused on their latest generation of weapons like their hypersonic missiles. There's little reason to not throw COTS chips into drones and other mass produced, low cost items.
