It would be neat if some of the money publishers are sucking up is instead given to the peer reviewers as compensation for their efforts. It is such an important facet of keeping published research to a minimum standard.
The fact that reviewers go mostly unpaid for their work seems like a major disincentive to spend extra time -- which is already spread thin trying to stay ahead on the publish or perish treadmill -- digging deep into papers that send up red flags.
