I believe it has something to do with tracking, or rather with anti-tracking measures. I don't know how it works, but as you say different browsers and even different firefox profiles (with different addons set) could lead to different results. I believe, that the more paranoid I go with anti-tracking the more chance for me to stuck in a capcha loop. The issue comes not just on archive.is but some other sites as well. Sometimes I get just a statement that my browser is too old or something like that.
