Apple Shares the Secret of Why the 40-Year-Old Mac Still Rules
- anthk 3y agoApple didn't invent the GUI. Neither changed anything on the desktop users. Windows 95 on top of DOS curb-stomped Apple except on written/recorded/created media production, which did great on the G4 days for instance, and for a while with the G5. Then, with the Core Duo, Apple lost the battle against Intel. Also, lots of libre competition such as Krita and Blender are doing great remarks. Macs are not that "special" any more compared to your i7 PC with a good video card. Even Intel integrated cards have an awesome price for what they do. Android dominates the smartphone world. Windows PC's are nearly everywhere, but today most people can work remotely over an RDP session over the browser. And the rest of networked infra runs under Linux 90% of the time. Yes, even for online gaming servers to be played as clients under Windows.
- tambourine_man 3y agoYeah, the fact that Apple released a category defining product every decade for almost 50 years and became the world's largest corporation is a fluke. No added value to users whatsoever. Also, those designer fan boys could just as easily use Krita, Inkscape and Gimp. No need for Adobe.
- anthk 3y agoWith online subscription related rants with Adobe ans SAAS, just wait, >world largest corporation Yes, maybe. But you need to maintain all of that, while Google and MS can stay 'alive' with a much bigger and more huge market with far less spending. Over time, Apple will lose lost of clients. There is more market around Google/Android/MS products than Adobe. In the end, Google drives the economics more than Apple could ever dream. They own the data, and they are almost a monopoly on smartphones over the world, which is something in every household in half of the world. Over time, Apple can't win with these prices.
- tambourine_man 3y agoSure. “Apple is doomed, dying anytime now” is a never ending meme, I guess. I wouldn't bet on Google. No new hits in 15 years, lost its AI edge and even search is tanking. > With online subscription related rants with Adobe ans SAAS, just wait We have been waiting. I've been trying to use GIMP for more than 20 years. Creative Cloud SAAS has successfully been holding the market hostage for more than a decade. We all hate Adobe, it's just that there's nothing that even comes remotely close. It's that bad.
- anthk 3y agoGoogle has customers' life data. They know and listen on what you do, where you go and how do you seek out things. They control Maps, location, emails, messages, searches and even documents. They actively listen to you. Heck, they can perfectly guess where you spent the holidays in Google Tour, even the hotels where you checked-in at without telling them so at all. And that data surely it's sold back for hotels for a big sum. That's a granted source of income for advertisers and anyone in the world to sell things from a small and medium company. If you aren't in Google results, you don't exist.
