I think the only way to "protect" people from this is to educate them. Similar to Nigerian prince spam emails these will need to become common knowledge and people need to learn to ignore them. The one thing that won't work is to ban AI because the people that won't care about this ban are the same stealing money using AI. But where is the "Report Scam" button? Facebook doesn't have it, Twitter doesn't have it and neither does TikTok.
