This is a typical GLP-1 journalist self-report, but it is still amusing to see it hit so many of the usual points: the realization that 'CICO' was always really false in any substantive sense, that people really do differ in exercise & weight-related properties and are not stamped out from the same blank-slate mold, that the mind really is just what the brain does and so of course things like hunger can be modified by an appropriate chemical (little more mysterious than pushing the 'off' button turning your computer off), the discovery that dieting/exercise really does not work well, the insistence on exaggerating the drawbacks like the 'plateau' or claiming 'rapid weight gain', the unwelcome realization that being fat was bad for you and people did notice your appearance, the strung und drang about possibly needing a chemical treatment for a long time (as opposed to, the one-and-done effect of dieting & exercise...?), etc.
I know on HN we are justifiably distracted by AI, but it's worth remembering that out among normal Americans, for their quality of life and things they can touch and see, GLP-1 drugs are one of the most incredible & disruptive scientific breakthroughs in a long time. (And I include COVID vaccines in that comparison.)
