I just heard a good podcast on this last night by Ezra Klein (NY Times) with guest C.T Nguyen. Even the utterly nonsense can become a way to simplify the world and hold it all in your head, like a videogame. The attraction comes not from the plausibility of it but rather, the simplicity after a few challenging obstacles of understanding. IE: flat earth become a rather easy way to simplify global politics and ruling classes. It's not obviously absurd, as there's a few steps in reaching this "enlightenment"
