From the J.C.Karew book Why We Need to be Wild, it sounds like his violent actions were motivated by frustration over the direction society has taken. He apparently wasn't the type to write a book and do a speaking tour, or start a youth camp, or promote early childhood family education as a way to decrease trauma. In an alternate universe he might have been a catalyst for change away from the path too many of us are on (that of overconsumption; from the book, maybe 1/6 of today's population contributes essentially nothing to changing the earth climate). It is possible and feasible to live wholesome, wonderful lives in small, local social groups with enough good land to support innumerable other life and a seasonal harvest circuit.
