Why wouldn’t they use SteamOS? Windows 11 is plagued with bloatware that even if removed will return. The telemetry is out of control and the last thing any mobile device needs.
There are like 5 games that _need_ windows and they’re all due to aggressive anti cheat software because they’re competitive online multiplayer games…are people even playing those on handheld?
- xeonmc 3y agoThe practical reality so far is that SteamOS is functionally a platform exclusive OS not available to any other vendors.
- stonogo 3y ago?? https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown works on several of my machines.

- ziml77 3y agoThat is the old SteamOS from back when Valve tried to make Steam Machines a thing. It's based on Debian 8 which has been EOL for 4 years. The latest SteamOS is based on Arch and isn't officially packaged for installation anywhere other than the Steam Deck.
- DiabloD3 3y agoSteamOS is just a Linux distro, it works on any platform that can run Linux; the "closed source" part of SteamOS is just the Steam client, which they build as a distro-neutral binary for multiple archs (yes, they build it for ARM, too; there are very few sold-on-Steam native Linux games that have ARM binaries, but they exist and its growing).
- pjmlp 3y agoA Linux distro made by Valve to avoid paying Windows licenses, and due to Gabe Newell issues with the Windows Store, while offering mostly Windows games. Something that other OEMs don't care as they are in good business with Microsoft, and don't have a store themselves.
- smoldesu 3y agoOther OEMs in the same price segment (eg. Ayaneo NEXT Lite) are actually being forced to use Linux/Proton stacks to save money on Windows licenses. For consoles that are actually price-competitive with Steam Deck (read: console pricing), the consumer wastes money amortizing a $50-120 Windows license that could otherwise be put towards upgraded internals or lower MSRP. I know people who bought the Steam Deck purely because they were terrified of owning a handheld that ran Microsoft Windows. And who can blame them? You don't need a PC to be a PC gamer anymore.
- pjmlp 3y agoGood luck with the second coming of "OS/2 runs Windows better than Windows", it went down really well.
- DiabloD3 3y agoIronic you say that, because Microsoft is going around telling people Windows runs Linux better than Linux. Linux is the most used OS in the world, Windows exists in this tiny niche where people play games, and that's quickly eroding.
- bencelaszlo 3y agoActually there is an unoffical solution for this, Ayaneo will use it for their new handheld device even: https://github.com/HoloISO/holoiso https://github.com/HoloISO/holoiso
- dharmab 3y agoIf your console runs SteamOS, you have to compete with Valve and Steam Deck, on a platform maintained by Valve developers. If your console runs Windows, you can differentiate yourself from Steam Deck by supporting a larger library of games, on a relatively neutral platform. "like 5 games" is an underestimate, and they're major ones. Just on https://store.steampowered.com/charts/mostplayed https://store.steampowered.com/charts/mostplayed I see: - PUBG - Apex Legends - Call of Duty - GTA5 - The Finals - War Thunder - Destiny 2 Not to mention off-Steam games like LoL, Valorant, Fortnite, etc. Yes, people play competitive games on Steam Deck. You can plug a mouse, keyboard and display into them. In fact, they're really popular at the big LAN party conventions- your rig can fit into a backpack.
- ziml77 3y agoYou haven't actually verified those games don't work on the Steam Deck... Apex Legends has been supported on Deck for a while now, since the developers started distributing it with a Proton-compatible version of EAC.
- pjmlp 3y agoBecause Windows games run better on Windows and the companies aren't managed by Gabe Newell, with personal issues against Microsoft due to Steam.
- heyoni 3y agoPeople not taking personal issue is the reason we're stuck with windows 11. But I understand individuals not having the energy to get materially outraged at candy crush showing up on their start menu. My issue here is with companies whose focus is to make those decisions and weigh their options carefully. To me, it's not about performance or nativeness of games; it's either technical ineptitude or the same pressure tactics from microsoft still at play. > People not taking personal issue is the reason we're stuck with windows 11. - pjmlp 3y ago"OS/2 runs Windows better than Windows", a success recipe for IBM.
