Sports Illustrated lays off entire staff
- CM30 3y agoSadly, this is not at all surprising. Making journalism sustainable is incredibly difficulty in the internet age, and it's even worse for subjects like this, where competition from social media is intense and the barrier to entry is nearly nonexistent. Plus, even the best publications struggle with not being the easy money spinners their billion dollar owners want them to be, since it's not the kind of business that's going to get you a unicorn/FAANG level return on investment.
- KomoD 3y agoSo what happens now? Is Sports Illustrated basically just... dead?
- lucas_membrane 3y agoThe name is still an owned thing. It will go through the mill and come out someplace else in a new (possibly lesser) incarnation someplace else sometime, as long as someone with enough money thinks it has enough value. These things take a long time to fade away, like old soldiers, the Roman Empire, Dodge Brothers automobiles, Interwoven socks, and Sarah Lee cakes.
- ralphc 3y agoI'll add Montgomery Ward catalogs, which I still get every now and then, and Bell and Howell that I see on commercials. These names are meaningless compared to their past.
