I'm pretty sure that making arguments under idealistic assumption often allows us to make progress. Yea certain methods can seem problematic and I definitely have worried about this before. But I'm pretty sure there's evidence that certain, useful, theories just wouldn't exist unless we used infinity in some capacity.
