You have fallen for the very manipulation at the core of the rot of American society. Gun rights is not what keeps government overreach at bay, there are plenty of countries that overthrow their government without all these weapons. Gun rights, or a myriad other wedge issues are just there to manipulate the electoral system, the reason for the rot is the extreme unchecked power of capital, which in the last 30 years has completely eroded civil society and the protections it offered, to instead protect entrenched interests. It is the usual path of decline for a lot of empires, and it seems to have been accelerated due to the advent of tv/cable and the internet.
- matheusmoreira 3y agoThat such "manipulation" is even possible in the first place is evidence of the rot. The nation should stay true to its principles. It shouldn't matter what capital does, the principles should be resillient to such manipulation. Wedge issues should not actually exist. Everyone should just agree that human beings are free and therefore they obviously have the right to bear arms. Otherwise it wouldn't be america anymore. I don't really understand why people can't agree on such things anymore but I do think it's a huge weakness in modern day america. No one is surprised when China disappears dissidents but people act like the US is above that even though the patriot act exists and can be used to deny the basic rights of US born citizens. It should have been above such things on principle.
