I would not recommend trying that defense in a courtroom.

  It has been tried, and been successful in many cases (on mobile, so not linking at this time). A proper example is in respect to right to repair laws and court cases. This is one of the primary arguments in the ability to hack your own devices, and others in the cases of grey/white hat hacking defenses.
