I got this hunch that most searches are for the top domain of a site as people forget of it is .org, .com, .gov or .us or whatever. However, I don't understand

I got this hunch that most searches are for the top domain of a site as people forget of it is .org, .com, .gov or .us or whatever. However, I don't understand how statcounter got the data about usage it the first place. Their methodology might be flawed.
