I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately in terms of illegal immigration in the USA. Both Democrats and Republicans clearly see illegal immigrants as future Democrat voters, no matter how they try and frame it to their current voters.
That’s all very shortsighted thinking when you consider the birth rate decline affecting most nations. So many countries will face problems of population shortage in the coming decades and the USA is getting millions of extra people from many of those countries.
Power hungry politicians are focused on either creating a permanent underclass of Democrat voters or trying to remove those potential Democrat voters. If the politicians actually cared about long term global dominance, they’d focus on integration and job training.

Perhaps elite strategists look at such a viewpoint, but few politicians and almost no voters look at it those terms.
- klooney 3y agoRuy Texeira's The Emerging Democratic Majority in the early lights is the source of this. Was a very talked about book, The Atlantic did a big feature, there's a retrospective on it every few years. There's also the original argument, and what I often refer to as "vulgar Emerging Democratic Majortarianism" which is how lefty people in real life will generally phrase it- basically a team sport "yay immigrants will vote for us"(Or "boo immigrants won't vote for us" for righties). Interestingly, Ruy Texeira is fully off of the Emerging Democratic Majority train, and thinks the Democrats are driving off a cliff driving away working class voters now.
- Arainach 3y agoDoes anyone who uses the term "lefty" actually converse with any progressives in real life (trolls on social media do not count)? I've volunteered in efforts in the ground, I've worked directly with state legislators and their staff, and I have never come across anyone framing the argument in this manner.
- klooney 3y agoI have never worked with state legislators, but my general impression is that they're more, uh, polite, than the general population. I framed that version as "vulgar..." for a reason.

Perhaps elite strategists look at such a viewpoint, but few politicians and almost no voters look at it those terms. “In the final stretch before Iowa’s caucuses next Monday, the former Republican president has repeatedly suggested that Democrats are encouraging migrants to flow into the country illegally in order to register them to vote in the 2024 election.” — https://apnews.com/article/trump-migrants-border-voter-fraud-campaign-40bbf5748615a3b1f6087ff920f59278 https://apnews.com/article/trump-migrants-border-voter-fraud... When you read the article it is clear that the fear expressed is democrats are doing things to get illegal immigrants to vote (voter fraud etc), and it is only really a fear because they will vote for the democrat team. Now, I will concede that it isn’t clear from the propaganda that either the people saying these things or the audience believe it, but it is absolutely being said.
- Arainach 3y ago>and it is only really a fear because they will vote for the democrat team. .....and because of decades of anxiety over "they took pur jobs" fearmongering, and because of the color of their skin and the languages they speak, and a number of other major reasons. The Republican voting base doesn't hate immigrants because they're Democrats.
