I remember a lesson from a literature course titled "How I Learnt to Swim". The author had read books and watched the experts and got tips from them but until he floated in the water he had not even begun to learn swimming. This is the issue with academia too. Too much of the stuff be it electronics, theory of computation, algorithms or software engineering is taught before most learners had even had a taste of programming. No wonder very learn much from school.
