JW Player suffers traffic loss after dynamic piracy blocking blunder
- samspenc 3y agoWow the scale of unintended consequences. So a few dozen sites streaming the game illegally, caused their hosting CDN site to be blocked in the entire country for 3+ months, impacting all other users of the platform.
- phyzome 3y agoI mean, for some value of "caused", yes... I would say the cause is India's clown-show of a judicial blocking process, and the illegal streaming sites were just the trigger.
- dilyevsky 3y agoWe had that happen at one of my previous gigs except the country was Spain. A few pirate soccer streams that were quickly DMCA'ed and taken down caused some of our domains to be blocked by ISPs via their SNI filters. Was very painful (and I assume expensive) to get off the blocklist.
- SlavikCA 3y agoSo much for the "advantage" of using cloud service... This example is another argument to demand that all parts of the website to be hosted by the website, not everywhere in the cloud.
- dylan604 3y agoThis comes across as pretty myopic. There are plenty of websites that are barely able to be managed because the site owner is not some IT genius. Asking some site to host its own video content, pay for the bandwidth, etc. Somethings that the modern web user has come to expect is beyond the the scope of just hosting some html/js/css.
- zilti 3y agoYou don't need to be an "IT Genius" to host.
- prmoustache 3y agojwplayer.com was not hosting the content in this case. It was just the javacript player being fetched by the page.
- dylan604 3y agowhat does that have to do with the price of tea in China?
