Based on a skim of the article; they uploaded, ran, and tested their code on a cubesat running "Lockheed Martin’s SmartSat technology". So, it wasn't that expensive. My initial thought was cubesats are cheap anyway, but they don't seem to have even launched one themselves. Gimmick, sure. but it's an important milestone and costs less than a series of TV ads.
