I have frequented the immediate vicinity of People's Park maybe 3-6 times per year over the last four decades, and never saw it as a friendly, inviting place. In more recent years, I didn't even feel it was a good idea to park a car along the bordering streets for fear of break-ins.
I understand the history and endorse some of the ideals that originally led to the park's "creation" (I started high school in the 1960s, after all), but it has now gotten to the point where would-be domestic terrorists are the people most invested in its preservation, as demonstrated by the very recent resignation of a promising young elected representative on the Berkeley City Council.
"he contacted police and considered seeking restraining orders after being 'followed and told to kill himself, and that concerning messages were taped to the door of his home and mailed to him.' He said that those incidents 'often' stemmed from his support for UC Berkeley's proposed housing project for People's Park."
