Anyone with an interest in language and its function in understanding the world, should check out late Wittgenstein. Specifically Philosophical Investigations. Probably my favourite work of Western Philosophy.
- williamcotton 3y agoSlab!
- williamcotton 3y agoBut if the ostensive teaching has this effect, ---am I to say that it affects an understanding of the word? Don't you understand the call "Slab!" if you act upon it in such-and-such a way?--- Doubtless the ostensive teaching helped to bring this about; but only together with a particular training. With different training the same ostensive teaching of these words would have effected a quite different understanding. - Philosophical Investigations, 6. Cool downvote, bro!
- williamcotton 3y agoExtra cool downvotes! Do y'all even get why I was peeved by the downvote? I was referencing the very book the commentator was talking about and it was clearly misinterpreted by an ignoramus. And yes, I've read the FAQ, thank you very much. I earn my karma, I'll spend it how I like!
- numpad0 3y agoJoke that has to be explained is a joke.
- williamcotton 3y agoIt’s not a joke. It’s an appreciation of a key part of Wittgenstein’s theories of language and meaning. Looks like everyone moved to Woosh City over the weekend.
- bomewish 3y ago+1. came here to confirm this had been posted so I didn't have to. Such a nutty book, but kind of addictive and fun to join him.
