Resistors drift, that's true. I've seen them drift 10-20% across 70 years. I've seen transistors from the 1960s work just fine. It's not the hardware. If it was, you'd get random crashes, not slower performance. Everything is locked to the clock signal, and there is plenty of wiggle room, relatively speaking. It's the OS, and how software gets installed/removed.
