99% of Americans live near a Mexican restaurant
- eesmith 3y agoThis is a light rewrite of the Pew Research analysis at https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/01/11/about-1-in-10-restaurants-in-the-us-serve-mexican-food/ https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/01/11/about-1-i... . "Near" here means "in the same county" as a restaurant which serves Mexican food. I mention this as some counties are pretty large and require more than an hour at highway speeds to cross, which might not qualify as "near". The article says this "highlights the growing influence of Mexican Americans on U.S. culture". If we do the same analysis for restaurants which serve Italian food then that number should be even higher, given the near ubiquity of pizza. Yet I don't think that highlights the growing influence of Italian Americans on U.S. culture. I have an issue with the analysis. It says they started with "the 101,009 restaurants with some sort of Hispanic or Latino food category tag in the SafeGraph". But consider Blake's Lotaburger in New Mexico. It serves burgers, burritos, and chili con carne. I can't tell if it's categorized as hamburger restaurant or a Hispanic or Latino restaurant. That data is not provided. If "Tex-Mex" counts as Mexican food then New Mexican food should surely be included too.
