I understand what the author is saying but I also feel like if I was helping someone with a problem and there's an apparent easy solution that the best way to understand and get up to speed with where they're at on the problem would be to ask why they haven't gone with these other solutions?
- DamonHD 3y agoWhich is not quite the same! "Why don't you just do X?" assumes that the people being spoken to are stupid in some way, overlooking the obvious. "When you tried X, why didn't it do the job?" is a whole lot kinder and doesn't presume that X wasn't tried. And if it wasn't, allows some face-saving and re-thinking.
