New Features in Fedora Asahi Remix
- michaelmrose 3y agoIf you click the link you see > Hi! It looks like you might have come from Hacker News. Well Hi to you too! > We're going to be blunt: Hacker News is increasingly a haven for alt-right trolls and hateful abusers, and the administrators have demonstrated that they have no interest in improving the situation despite repeated pleas by multiple people, in public and in private, even going as far as deploying countermeasures to prevent us from blocking HN traffic. A significant number of Hacker News commenters have repeatedly directed harassment, abuse, doxxing, and bigotry at multiple Asahi Linux developers, and much of this content remains available and not flagged or downvoted. This appears to be a work of complete fantasy. It appears to me that inappropriate content is normally flagged. If they don't think its flagged fast enough then helping flag it faster/better it seems an entirely reasonable thing to do. Be the change and all that. > The open source community cannot stand to accept this kind of conduct. Many of us are members of minorities and regularly subject to abuse by these kinds of online communities. Without diverse developers, there would be no Asahi Linux. I'm still not clear on how whatever harassing conduct is related to hacker news? Are people keying hacker news wuz here on people's cars or are they merely seeing a spike in negative activity immediately followed by traffic from hacker news. This would be somewhat normal. ANYTHING that draws a lot of interest is going to bring with it a small minority of assholes. This woulds be true if they were discussed on reddit, twitter, or cnn. > These abusers may not use curse words or blatant slurs as often in HN as they do in other communities, but the messages they spread and brigade on the site are just as hateful and damaging as what you will find in other darker corners of the web, and anyone familiar with such conduct will have no trouble noticing the prevalence of dog whistling, bad faith arguments..., Who is even talking politics on threads regarding a linux distro in the first place? > ... and discourse aimed at marginalizing minorities under the guise of polite discussion in many HN threads. We understand that not all Hacker News users are like this. What? > However, by letting these vocal users run undeterred, Y Combinator and Daniel Gackle are tacitly approving of this abuse and hurting the reputation of the entire site and its userbase. Are there some examples of negative actions on this forum? > If you want to support us and what we do and you are a Hacker News user, please bring this up and demand change within the community. I already flag people being assholes now. I don't understand what change is needed because I personally haven't noticed a problem. Some examples would of course be helpful. > As things stand today, we consider Hacker News traffic to be a net negative for the project (yes, it's that bad), and we kindly ask you to move on to the next story. Certainly
- jancsika 3y ago> If they don't think its flagged fast enough then helping flag it faster/better it seems an entirely reasonable thing to do. Be the change and all that. I'm quite pleased to know that the Asahi Linux team-- one of the most impressive and productive hacker teams I've read about in awhile-- apparently spends 0% of their busy schedule flagging low-effort bullshit on HN.
- michaelmrose 3y agoBut they do spend time complaining about it and pushing code designed only to insult potential readers. I went looking through threads looking for misbehavior and what I found was instances with hundreds of comments and 2 flagged people being assholes. This is on the overall damn fine work for a public forum.

- Aloha 3y agoIf it's so awful why are you here?
- headsick 3y ago[flagged]
- tombert 3y agoSorry, can you provide a citation where Dang allows for calls of violence? I usually see threads like that shut down pretty quick. Do you have a link to a comment that called for violence but wasn't deleted or locked?
- ephemeral-life 3y agoReddit is also orange though...
- psychoparrot 3y agoCompletely absurd behavior to block Hackernews because they demand total ideological submission. Are there any alternate linux distros for arm macs available?
- tentickles54 3y ago[flagged]
- Aloha 3y agoWhy are you here? Like you basically appear to believe this place is a swamp, why are you here participating? To troll? You're not suggesting a solution exactly, just being angry.
- Firerouge 3y agoAnd a new 7 day old account at that
- Aloha 3y agoIndeed.

- tombert 3y agoI'll admit that I'm in a privileged position so maybe this stuff just goes over my head, but I've been fairly active on Hacker News for around 8.5 years, and I feel like HN is among the least toxic forums on the internet. Occasionally you get some alt-right moron, but usually they get downvoted [1], and I've never really seen them get any traction. I did have some suspicions about Russian troll farms [2], so I guess I understand the worries. I've seen plenty of idiots on here, but it's rare that I see anything terribly toxic on HN. At this point, I think LinkedIn is by far the most toxic place I have to look at now. - Aloha 3y agoYour experience mirrors my own, while yes some minority of the user population are indeed shitheads, the majority appear to be thoughtful caring people. I can understand why you block HN, because of traffic flow, but not for content.
- jasoneckert 3y agoOP here - I wholeheartedly agree. As I mentioned in another comment further down, I was not aware of the redirect message before posting what I felt was a great blog post summarizing the recent advancements in Fedora Asahi Remix (my daily driver for software development and personal use).
- tombert 3y agoYep, totally understand; I actually read the post after I posted the comment on HN. While I might not agree with all their stances, there’s no doubt that there are some extremely talented people working on Asahi.
- elromulous 3y agoAnyone else wish Asahi was making Ubuntu/Debian their official distro? (Yes, I'm aware there are Asahi Debian options, but the official support is always better.)
- cassianoleal 3y agoI'd have loved for it to be Debian. Fedora is a very respectable distro though, just not my preference.
- SuperNinKenDo 3y agoThat's hilarious. I appreciate them flying their colours so proudly, it makes knowing to avoid the project much easier. This kind of thinking and behaviour is reflective of a community/organisation that you will be burned by if you attempt to contribute, participate in, or a product which you come to rely on. Damn shame, but good to know about it now, rather than later.
- captn3m0 3y agoI’ve been using on my M2 Air for the last year (Secondary machine) via ALARM, and looking forward to switching to the Fedora Remix. Really great work, and happy to support this going forward as well. Webcam and Speaker support were the two big missing pieces for me, necessitating switch to Mac occasionally. And with the new energy-aware scheduling, it’s gonna last forever on my minimal usage.
- k310 3y agoI was not blocked clicking on the link above. I thought it might have to do with iCloud private relay, but that's off thanks to archive.ph (and other of their domains) putting up a captcha when I use it. No nastygram with it on or off. Do they know me to be a great person? (Just kidding, even if I am) Stuff that I disagree with on HN is easy to ignore. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- meisel 3y agoHow does the user experience compare right now between arch Linux and fedora on silicon Macs? Do these new changes benefit both?
- jasoneckert 3y agoThey primarily benefit Fedora Asahi Remix (the new flagship distro for Asahi) because that's where the integration work was focused. However, all work done by the Asahi project can be integrated into any distribution if the distribution provides that effort.
- peter-m80 3y agoImpressive work. Thanks!
