Why most consulting is bullshit

- cratermoon 3y agoI've alternated between being an FTE programmer and a consultant. I have become adept at diagnosing systemic problems in software development teams. The diagnosis is the easy part. The hard parts are all about explaining the ailment to the "patient", getting them to accept the diagnosis, and getting them to implement the treatment properly. Usually there are political reasons that a consultant can only point out – sometimes its execs, sometimes its senior or dominating team members. The reason why so many consultants give "tried-and-true" approaches is because organizations resist anything that isn't "certified" or "proven". Back when extreme programming and agile were new things, companies wouldn't adopt them because they were new. Now they are packaged up nicely with certifications and professional programs, so companies say they want to "do agile".
