I think it's kind of a combination - not having the tools pulled from under you, but also the device to device portability he mentions, and having all your content in text (or whatever) in a directory structure you control. And yes, it's exactly the same feeling when using Neovim, which has it's own web browser plugins. (He wrote the post in 2015. Wonder if he's still using Emacs now.)
