Whatever Works (For Housing)
- Podgajski 3y agoHousing for Ukrainians? Are these people serious? They think this is a good thing to brag about right now? With all the homelessness and housing troubles in the United States we’re building housing to give it to people who don’t even live here? How is that going to help housing? It’s a net 0
- CHB0403085482 3y agoQuote ~ "one of the other Ukrainians (one I sponsored elsewhere) found an entry level job and her salary is $100,000. " Skilled immigrant working in USA. What's the problem?
- Podgajski 3y agoYeah, that’s worse. They took hosting AND a job away from someone.
- CyberDildonics 3y agoIf you buy a can of soup at the grocery store, are you taking it away from someone? If you see someone buy a can of soup in front of you, would you tell them they are taking that can of soup away from you or would you just buy the next can of soup?
- Podgajski 3y agoSoup isn’t housing. But if I didn’t have any soup and someone imported a Ukrainian and they bought the last can of soup on the shelf, I would be upset.
- CyberDildonics 3y agoSo this was the last job in existence? Why does it matter to you that it is someone from Ukraine?
- jerlam 3y agoIt's a blog post with a bit too many pictures, but the gist is: This is the other way new living space is carved out of a wildly overpriced city. It works because it doesn’t exist on paper and the authorities haven’t yet discovered all the ways it violates a thousand cherished regulations. Since housing costs so much (in the SF Bay Area), people are (illegally) living in buildings which aren't supposed to be used as housing. But this eventually leads to situations like the 2016 Ghost Ship warehouse fire.
