Author didn't mention the other problem which is that sometimes the hyphen is replaced with a space rather than being dropped (while other sites, or sometimes other parts of the same system) won't accept a space either. Plenty of people do have spaces in their surnames (like Conan Doyle) and shouldn't the system be able to distinguish between "Conan Doyle" and "Conan-Doyle"?)
