Nearly 1000 People Were Convicted of Stealing over Decades Due to Computer Bug

- WarOnPrivacy 3y agoThis phrasing, "U.K. government to pass a law" hints that this law will be pushed thru soon and victims can expect relief soon after. I'm less confident that relief is coming soon for all the wrongly convicted. Some of my skepticism is because the investigation has been lumbering on for ~2years. And some is due to remarks by other UK Gov officials. The government has been considering options to speed up justice for wrongfully convicted sub-postmasters. On Tuesday, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk said the idea of using legislation to quash convictions of all Post Office workers caught up in the scandal was under "active consideration". Former minister Nadhim Zahawi has called for a "simple bill" to quash all the remaining convictions based on "bad data". However, others have disagreed, including former attorney general Dominic Grieve, who told the BBC that it would amount to "parliamentary interference in the judicial process". Instead, he said each case "ought to be considered on its own merits", and sent to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), which investigates alleged miscarriages of justice. ref: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-67925304 https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-67925304 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38930011 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38930011
