A Rail Cart for the Space Conscious Passenger (2022)
- booboofixer 3y agoLove it, thought of making something similar once just to travel downtown Toronto using the streetcar tracks, especially late at night with infrequent service.
- CapitalistCartr 3y agoIn the railroading business, the little cars that run on the tracks are called speeders.
- axiomdata316 3y agoVery cool insight! Do you work with Railroads professionally? I'm surprised there isn't more available about this. It looks like a really fun hobby.
- CapitalistCartr 3y agoI volunteer at the Florida Railroad Museum. We have a couple speeders.
- theflyingelvis 3y agoSheldon?
- JKCalhoun 3y agoJust got algo'd a YouTube video of someone on a similar rail car cruising along an abandoned section of track in SoCal. My first thought was: tow a couple more of those cars but with solar and LiPO batteries and you can travel all day. (I know too of people that "rail bike". That looks like a blast.)
- axiomdata316 3y agoMe too! Looks like a lot of fun. I wonder what a typical cost is. Love the idea of Solar with LiPO batteries!
- Animats 3y agoWith a hinged design, it could fold up into a briefcase-sized package for easy carrying.
- ajot 3y agoAs much as I like Hackaday as a hub/blog specialized on projects, the project itself has a very nice webpage: https://tech.cato.cat/railkart.html https://tech.cato.cat/railkart.html
- timnetworks 3y agoWhen I read (elsewhere) that train wheels are actually not cylindrical but conical to allow them to self-adjust on turns, it kinda blew my mind. Now I'm staring at the wheel flanges, feeling like a big brain.
