We will never escape rankings because the point of going to college is only partially the education, it's also a way to sort people into iq castes. There isn't a huge difference between the education you get at an elite school and any accredited school, yet people bend over backwards to get into good schools because you'll forever be in the elites of society if you graduate from one. If you squash U.S News there will simply be other methods people use to compare colleges. In truth, the current system is probably better than using legacy and reputation to rank schools. We just need to find better metrics.
