Not really sure what you mean by it taking years for the Iphone to catch on... It was highly coveted from its release in 2007. The 3G was a massive step forward, but by 2009 and the 3GS release, it was completely mainstream- at least to those who could afford it. I don't think this is going to get picked up by anyone who has the money, not even close.
