- bell-cot 3y agoNot an expert...but hasn't "Palestinian kid throws rock at Israeli soldier, soldier responds by shooting the kid dead" been a fairly-regular thing since the 1950's?
- SauciestGNU 3y agoI dont know what to say besides what's happening right now has a different feeling than shooting a kid for throwing stones. As wrong as that is (I believe), the Israelis can point to the concrete action of the stone throwing as a proximate cause for execution. The current conflict is killing tens of thousands of noncombatants who had nothing to do with the October incursion. They may have supported it politically, or celebrated the violence against their oppressors, but that doesn't make them combatants deserving of death. I think the difference now is the clarity of the mass disproportionate response. It's impossible to stretch the definition of "self-defense" to include the actions Israel is currently taking. I think that's why people are motivated to respond differently and with a different degree.
- bell-cot 3y agoSadly, 5-digit civilian casualties (when the Israeli military sweeps through an area) is probably nothing new - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_Lebanon_War#Casualties https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_Lebanon_War#Casualties
