This is reminiscent of the Hemming nickels. High-quality counterfeit nickels were made in the 1950s, with several dates but a common reverse. That's okay, except one of the dates counterfeited was 1944.
1944 nickels were made of a special nickel-free alloy for wartime needs, and they were distinguished with a large mint-mark. On the reverse. (Normally, coins minted in Philadelphia had no mint-mark)
Coin collectors soon noticed the "1944 no-P" and the scam began to unwind.
