At what point does the government own you if they have all of your private info from biometrics to finances? Everyone is fine talking about AI safety and all that, but talking about how government abuses technology to have a tighter control on the public is often seen as conspiracy talk.
We're probably already there and they have all the info that is needed, but I think every small barrier counts. For example in the U.S. we've seen how police can abuse their authority because they're bad cops or perhaps to meet some quota. How much more will this corruption be magnified when they have high tech tools to look into your entire life? I think it's at least something that needs to be discussed and talked about, or we don't know if we're heading into another dark age in human history.
- lwhi 3y agoOnce upon a time this was a conversation. The idea of a national ID card in the UK was widely debated and seen as a complete disaster for the reasons you raise. The culture we live in has shifted to one of permissive resignation; perhaps because we're so deeply embedded in technology it's no longer a question that has a practical use. How can any of this be rolled back? The genie was let out of the bottle quite a while ago, and I don't think it can be put back.
