Just a thought: would it -at least in theory- be possible to remove all the locks, have ocean water flow coast to coast? Yes I understand there's big lakes part of the Panama canal system. So environmental impact could be huge. And elevation differences - which may imply a massive amount of additional digging required. But this is the Panama canal - rerouting cargo also has a significant (and ongoing!) eco-footprint.
