I switched from i3 to bspwm a few years ago and I have basically a "complete" setup. I do occasionally make scripts like you mention, they're super fun, handy, and almost impossible to share unless someone else has the same niche knowledge and requirements.

Thanks--I've been looking into AwesomeWM as an alternative but I'll check out bspwm too!
