Something that occurred to me recently: It probably isn't just me who hasn't kept up to date in how java projects are structured nowadays, let alone python projects. So many open-source projects seem to assume that you know all this, even though it changes yearly and every language and framework have their own way of doing things. Getting a grip on how things are structured, let alone why, is always the hard part for me. But maybe people are better at just hacking away and figuring out that stuff as needed than I am.
