A bit like TV advertising then? I honestly don't know nor care if TV advertising works but we just turn the sound off when the ad-slot starts and just ignore it. We've noticed that ads are getting more garish in a desperate attempt to sell the latest must-have (apparently) ephemeral junk but we just ignore those too.
- 2Gkashmiri 3y agoi do not have a tv at home. i use newpipe+sponsorblock for youtube. xtra for twitch. ublock origin for firefox. i find advertising as eye cancer. its so jarring and fast and obnoxious. why do we have to build huge infra then beg for ad money as someone put it "someone has to pay for it" when we can go the old route and self host everything and use something like federation where costs get distributed? facebook is a monolith and they need billions to satisfy shareholders. NOT MY PROBLEM. i will continue to use facebook (if at all) without giving them a chance to generate ad revenue because they should otherwise block me. that is now internet work. like how netflix works. why can't you have link-based banner ads on newspaper websites that don't seem to turn the website into a cancer inducing vomit? people would be encouraged to click on ads to people would gladly do that. on the contrary, advertisers want to "TRACK" users in the guise of letting webistes earn some pennies
