The World of Web Browsers Is in a Bad Way
- bazil376 3y agoSeems like when there are too few browser engines we fret about monopolies and then when there are too many we moan about how we have to deal with the idiosyncrasies of a bunch of different browsers
- 1vuio0pswjnm7 3y ago"Ladybird is a browser that needs more development to be ready for the big time, but at the same time its small development team have achieved the near-impossible feat of writing from scratch a fully-functional modern web browser." Jenny, what does that mean "fully-functional modern web browser". The companies that have controlled the standards are focused on a commercial web, full of online advertising. The browsers they have created are optimised for surveillance, advertising, and lately, payments. If that is what "modern web browser" must be, i.e., any competing browser must be able to do all the same things, match Chrome feature for feature, and if the only useful purpose of the web is to surveil it users, show them ads and sell them stuff, then why have more than one browser. What is needed is a web browser that does not cater to advertising. It will neither be "modern" nor "full-fucntional" in the opinions of those advertising companies. That's why they control the standards. They want to be the review board for whether a browser is useful or not.
